Producing a movie in Italy can get tricky for foreigners, and the main reason is a complex set of rules and laws that control this industry.

There are some pros for foreign companies, though: mainly in the form of “tax credit”. Foreign movie productions can obtain a tax credit up to 30% of the eligible production costs.

Among the costs that can obtain the tax credit you can find, usually up to 40% of the incurred costs:

· Pre-production costs

· Production costs

How to get the tax benefits or the for foreign production companies

There’s an important catch: the foreign company cannot obtain these benefits on its own, but needs to partner with an Italian production service company. Foreign companies can, therefore, reduce their cost up to 30% of the Italian spend. In fewer words: it can help save a significant sum of money.

Furthermore, the foreign company must pass a “cultural eligibility test”, scoring at least 50 points out of 100. Some of the mandatory content requirements are:

· The film must be adapted from a literary work

· The film is to relate to an historical, legendary, 
religious, social, artistic or cultural event

· The film must associate to a celebrity of artistic,
historical, religious, social or cultural importance and/or be set in Italy

There are also the Italian Film Commision 
that allow for grant money if the film is partially shot in the region it belongs to, or by using industry professionals
 who live in the particular Italian region.
